Mission Statement

This project is a continuation of twenty years of commitment by the New England District of Kiwanis International to improving care of the injured child. Recognizing that accurate and timely data acquisition is essential to understanding the disease of injury in children, and that valid data is the platform upon which improved methods of therapy are based, the project will exploit state of the art information technology to implement a secure, Internet based trauma registry that will enable any interested health care professional in the world submit data and participate in the process of investigation of all aspects of childhood injury.

By combining this technology with modern web messaging and search engine capabilities, this data management system will generate a searchable knowledge base that will enable exchange of real time, evidence based, case related professional opinion regarding all aspects of management of pediatric injury.

Access to the knowledge base will be through a public web site that acknowledges the support of Kiwanis, and links to other related Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute programs.  Through this public page any health care provider will have immediate access to a full spectrum of injury and critical care management protocols to provide them immediate help in caring for an injured child.  Users will be able to e-mail experts with questions, review relevant reports, and search for information from established reference libraries.

Registered users with appropriate password security will access the secure registry through this site to manage their own patient data, develop ad hoc reports, and collaborate with other registered users in analyzing data and defining improved methods of care.

This knowledge base, in concert with a growing, international data registry will provide a unique new system of clinical decision support.  The system exploits modern information management technology to accomplish this goal with significantly less expense, and is designed to be maintained in perpetuity at annual costs that are a fraction of what was traditionally required for research projects of this magnitude.

Immediate beneficiaries of this project include:

1.   Physicians who will have

a.   Immediate access to relevant clinical management guidelines,

b.   Ability to generate ad hoc reports “on the fly”,

c.   Capability to search existing messaging or established reference libraries for
information to assist clinical care, and

d.   A system of secure communication with peers.

2.   Trauma data registrars who will have

a.   A modern, user-friendly process of data entry,

b.   Ability to customize certain fields for local requirements, and

c.   Pre-defined automatic reporting of performance improvement and quality assurance
 filters.

3.   Research investigators who will have

a.   Access to accumulated, valid epidemiological data,

b.   An established network of institutions for clinical trials, and

c.   An information management system that will support multiple, simultaneous outcomes
 studies.
